Drug/Sharps Disposal

Prescription Drugs

Burnett Medical Center has a drug collection and disposal receptacle located in the main entrance for the safe and anonymous disposal of unused or expired medicines and controlled substances. The receptacle will be accessible during regular business hours.

The receptacle will accept:
Prescription medications (Schedules II-V controlled substances and non-controlled drugs)
Over-the-counter medications
Liquid medication bottles-less than 4 oz. in zip-lock bag

Not Accepted
Illegal (Schedule I) drugs
Needles/syringes or sharps containers
Medical devices, Batteries
Aerosol cans, Inhalers
Mercury-containing devices
Liquid antineoplastic agents (Such as chemotherapy drugs and cytotoxic drugs)

Sharps Disposal

Burnett Medical Center is a registered sharps collection
station. There is no charge for this service. Accepted items are needles and diabetic lancets.

Burnett Medical Center will NOT accept sharps mixed with paper wrappers, bandages, test strips, cotton swabs, and alcohol swabs.

All sharps must be in acceptable containers.

Acceptable containers include:
HARD plastic containers WITH LIDS
Sharps containers purchased from hospitals or pharmacies

Containers that will NOT be accepted are:
Milk containers
Glass containers of any kind
Plastic pop/water bottles
Plastic bags
Paper bags
Cardboard boxes
Open containers of any kind

Containers can be dropped off at Central Registration in the main lobby between 8:00 am and 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday only.
